Xiaomi Mi 3: First impressions review of the 'Chinese Apple's' Rs 13,999 flagship phone

Xiaomi Mi 3: First impressions review of the 'Chinese Apple's' Rs 13,999 flagship phone

Undefined Soul 11:54 PM Add Comment
Making its India debut, the fast-rising Chinese handset maker Xiaomi - which is often referred to as Apple of China - announced the launch of its three new handsets, including its flagship smartphone Mi 3, at its event in New Delhi. The Xiaomi Mi 3 is priced at Rs 13,999, while the other two phones launched under the Redmi series are priced under Rs 10,000.

Many of the experts got their hands on the Mi 3 smartphone at the launch event and here's what they thought of the phone, which the company claims is even faster than the Samsung Galaxy S5.

At first look, the Xiaomi Mi 3 reminded of the Lumia 800 as it borrows a lot of design elements from Microsoft-owned Nokia's early warriors. The Mi 3 looks good and has an elegant appeal to it. The phone's lightweight and its curved sides make it comfortable to grip. The matte-finished back adds to its beauty. Unlike the Rs 9,999 Redmi Note, the Mi 3's back panel is not removable and the phone supports only one SIM.

The phone's 5-inch 1080p IPS display has a good colour reproduction and great viewing angles. The touchscreen on the phone is very responsive and was smooth to navigate.

The disappointing thing in the phone was Xiaomi's India-specific theme. The icons used in the India theme are too gaudy for most smartphones users. But there is a way to switch the default theme and the looks improved.

The user interface is more like the one you find on other Android phones, but on exploring the apps, you see how different the interface is. For instance, the keyboard in the messaging app has all the numbers on the right - unlike their usual horizontal placement. I liked its calculator app as it looks a lot like the common Casio calculators.

Xiaomi places a high focus on themes for the phone. You get to see the different themes available, you might think different about it. The phone runs Android 4.4 with MIUI version 5.

The 13 megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash on the phone captures quality photographs, but don't expect them to be detailed. Its camera captures a good amount of light that makes the results impressive, but how well it fares in low-light conditions is yet to be tested. The 2-megapixel front camera is streets ahead of others phones in this price bracket; it won't disappoint selfie lovers. The phone is capable of recording 1080p videos.

The phone's 16GB of internal storage offers around 13.4GB of user-accessible storage space. There is no microSD card slot for additional storage. Beating under the hood is Qualcomm's 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB of RAM. It's too early to comment on its performance, so we are leaving it for the exhaustive review of the Xiaomi Mi 3 that would follow soon. The phone's speakers also appeared to produce loud and quality sound.

Altogether, the phone seems to be a good deal for its price but we are still holding our horses.

Whatsapp - Features you might not know

Undefined Soul 9:51 AM Add Comment
WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps available on almost all platforms such as Android, Blackberry, Windows, and iPhones.

They can be downloaded for free from the phone store for a year on most phones. After a year, you will have to pay a small annual fee to continue using the app, which doesn't happens. It renews Free Of Cost after every Year. However, some phones like the iPhone require users to make yearly payments right from the beginning. The cross-platform compatibility allows messaging between any two phones in which this app is installed. Once you have WhatsApp installed on your phone, you will be able to view a list of people from your Contacts who use this feature.

Sending your Conversation History
You can send a copy of your conversation on WhatsApp to yourself or someone else as an email message. To do this using an Android phone, click on Menu at the bottom of the conversation screen. Choose the Email conversation option and type the email address of the receiver. The entire conversation log including messages, videos, and images will be sent. This feature is also available in other smartphones.

Conversation Backup
You need not worry about accidentally deleting your favorite WhatsApp conversation with your friend. Click on Chat history backup and set up the time period indicating how often you want the backup to occur. You can also set the option to Never if you do not want a backup of your conversations.

Broadcasting a message
If you wish to send the same message to a few people at the same time, the Broadcast option can be quite useful. This option allows you to send the same message to multiple people on your WhatsApp list at a time. However, to use this feature, you must set up the Broadcast list that contains the list of people whom you wish to send the same message.

Privacy
This feature is available to both iPhone and Android users. You can hide the last seen option that prevents your WhatsApp buddies from seeing when you last checked your phone. While Android users can toggle between the ‘seen’ and ‘unseen’ statuses any number of times daily, iPhone users can make the change only once in a day. They have to wait for a day before making a change again.

Cloud Send
You can share much more than images and videos with WhatsAppusing the Cloud Send feature. With Cloud Send, you can get across a DOC, APK, ZIP, or PDF file to any person on your contacts list.

Only a few interesting features of WhatsApp messenger have been listed above. The best way to gain maximum insight of this wonderful app is to install it on your smartphone and explore it on your own. Most users find themselves hooked to this wonderful app and use it as the most sought after means of getting their messages across. It has also become increasingly popular over the traditional SMS. While some features vary depending on the smartphone in which the app is installed, most of them remain the same. This is why WhatsApp is still being widely used even after its acquisition by the social media giant Facebook.
What to expect from Android 4.4.3

What to expect from Android 4.4.3

Undefined Soul 10:53 PM Add Comment

Android KitKat
For many Android owners, the 4.4.3 update has yet to hit (though it is slowly rolling out -- when you will receive the update will depend upon your carrier and device). Although the new feature list isn't epic in length, what it brings to the table will have a lot of users happy... quite happy, actually. This is especially so for users who frequently snap photos with their device and/or record audio.
Aesthetics get little in the way of an upgrade. There is a slight tweak to the Dialer app, but that's the only change to the UI you'll readily notice.

The short list of major changes looks something like this:
  • A tweaked Dialer app with a colored Action bar (this is the UI change)
  • Contact app (sometimes called People) uses placeholder images, similar to those used by Gmail
  • Fixed hissing sound while recording videos (Nexus 5) is fixed
  • Fix for LTE connection dropping bug
  • Wi-Fi improvements
  • Microphone and earphone related changes
There are also a lot of other under-the-hood camera, Bluetooth, and other system-related bug fixes.
The cameras (especially those on Motorola devices) will see numerous improvements. Exposure consistency and flash coloring are dramatically improved. A big change for photo enthusiasts is better low-light handling for the front camera.

Speaking of Motorola devices, Moto X and Moto G owners will find a new app called Motorola Alert. This app will send out periodic messages to select contacts.

Probably the biggest upside to this update is the improvements to security, overall stability, and power profile features. One major update is an optimization to ZRAM support. This allows idle background apps to store data in a compressed RAM partition to free up RAM for applications. There's also a low-RAM API that improves performance on devices with as little as 512 MB of RAM (by using more aggressive memory management). Finally, an experimental Java runtime (called ART) improves application performance over the current Dalvik runtime.

On the downside, at least for Nexus 5 owners, the mm-qcamera-daemon bug (this is a bug that caused the camera to quickly drain the device battery) has not been fixed. The update also does not fix the LED Notification for missed calls (which has been plaguing many devices for some time now).

Android 4.4.3 is primarily a continuation of bug fixing for KitKat. However, don't let the lack of UI changes fool you... the 4.4.3 update will go a long way to improve the performance and stability of your device. So, when can you expect the rollout to your device?
  • GPE versions of the HTC One M7, Galaxy S4, HTC One M8, and the Sony Z Ultra should already have the update
  • Sprint users with Nexus 5 devices should be seeing the update soon
  • All other devices should see the update in the coming weeks
As with any Android update, predicting when a device will receive the new software is like predicting the weather -- it's hit and miss (and most often wrong). Every supported device should have the update available in the coming weeks. I can tell you that, as of this writing, Verizon HTC and Motorola devices, as well as AT&T Motorola devices, do not have the update available.

Apple IOS 8 : New Features

Apple IOS 8 : New Features

Undefined Soul 7:33 PM Add Comment
Many of the new features coming in iOS 8 are hidden under the surface or need developer pickup before they can be used, but there are a number of additions that beta testers can try out today.

iOS 8
Apple's WWDC keynote was chock full of new features, some for the end user and a ton for developers. Though not as sexy as new hardware, Apple's iOS ecosystem relies on developers to make the apps that keep bringing users back.
The new developer features are an incredibly opportunity for app makers, but it will be a few months before the end users begin to see the fruits of their labor.
Instead, here's a look at some of the new features that consumers will enjoy when iOS 8 comes out this fall.

1. Access apps from the lock screen

In iOS 7, apps like the official Starbucks app could put notifications on the lock screen to prompt user activity. In Starbucks' case, when users were located near a Starbucks, they could get single-swipe access to the coffee chain's digital payment system. Now, instead of a large notification, iOS 8 puts a small logo in the bottom left corner that can be swiped upwards to access certain features.
Figure A shows how the Starbucks and Apple Store apps can be accessed right from the lock screen when users are in those establishments.

Apps can be accessed from the lock screen.

2. Responding to a notification in iOS 8

In iOS 8, when users receive a notification that could require some action, such as a text message or a comment on Facebook, users can respond directly from the notification without leaving the app they were in.
Figure B shows how the user can respond to a text message with Siri or via a typed message. In the WWDC 2014 keynote, Apple executives showed how Facebook could add a "Like" button to a notification.

3. Battery Usage indicator in iOS 8

Keeping an eye on battery status is a fact of life for mobile device owners. In the past, it would sometimes be difficult to determine when an app was misbehaving and taking more battery life than it should. Now, with iOS 8, users can see what apps are using the most power (Figure C) and make adjustments accordingly.

4. Family Share in iOS 8

A useful new feature for families is Apple's Family Share (Figure D). With it, families can share music, movie, book, and app purchases across as many as six individual accounts with one credit card. Family Share even allows children to request permission to purchase apps, with a notification sent to parents to approve or deny.

5. Audio messages in iOS 8

Users can now send brief audio messages within iMessage, "borrowing" a feature from other popular chat programs like WhatsApp. Users can press and hold the microphone button to record a message (Figure E), then swipe up to send it. The recordings will automatically delete themselves to avoid filling up a device with unneeded messages, though users can manually decide which messages to keep.

6. Apple's new Health app in iOS 8

Apple's new Health app was the topic of a lot of discussion ahead of the keynote. In the end, Apple didn't seem to spend much time on the app, but it certainly holds a lot of potential.
At the moment, the Health app acts as a repository for health data sent by other apps, including calories burned, hours of sleep, heart rate, blood pressure, weight, and more (Figure F). It acts as a unifying force for health-related data that was previously spread across a multitude of different apps.
Many analysts expect the app's functionality to be expanded with the release of the rumored iWatch this fall.

7. Siri improvements in iOS 8

Apple has made improvements to Siri as well. She can now listen to songs and tell you what's playing via new integration with Shazam (Figure G), and when the phone or iPad is plugged into a power source (say, in the car), you can say "Hey, Siri" and then begin dictating normally.
This is truly hands-free, even if it also was "borrowed" from Android.

Viruses for Symbian OS and S60 - THE TRUTH

Viruses for Symbian OS and S60 - THE TRUTH

Undefined Soul 10:59 PM 1 Comment
Don't be panicked by media hype about viruses targetting Symbian OS smartphones!

Fact: there are NO viruses for any Symbian OS 9 smartphone - the OS makes access to dangerous 'propagating' functions restricted to proper 'signed' (checked) applications. So you if you own a S60 3rd Edition or UIQ 3-based smartphone you can stop worrying permanently.

Fact: no-one can pass a virus to your Symbian/S60/UIQ smartphone over Bluetooth or MMS without your knowledge.

Fact: the Symbian (pre-OS 9, pre-S60 3rd Edition) 'viruses' you read about aren't really in the wild, in the same way that Windows viruses are. Most Symbian malware has been created as 'concept' software and sent straight to an anti-virus vendor (who naturally make a pretty penny out of advising people that they need a-v utility software). Because it's realistically impossible for these apps to spread in most sensible societies, you simply will not come across them in the real world unless you happen to hang around with teenagers with older handsets bent on trying all the latest trojan-infested 'warez' (see below).

Fact: it's impossible for any piece of malicious software to make your smartphone unusable. Even if you allow a piece of 'malware' (i.e. a malicious program) onto your unit, it can't touch the OS and applications in ROM, which means you can always do a hard reset (typing in ‘*#7370#’ works with most Series 60 smartphones, 'Dial'+'*'+'3' while powering on for newer ones, procedures for UIQ and Series 80 units are in the manual) to get back to a working system.

Fact: the biggest hazard in the Symbian world is the 'warez' scene, where unscrupulous people 'crack' commercial software and then put it up for free download. Quite apart from the ethical considerations about putting genuine Symbian authors out of business, these cracked versions are the perfect opportunity for a malicious cracker to insert routines designed to cripple your phone or scramble your data.
You can stay clear of such malware by downloading your Symbian OS third party software from recognised software sites and staying clear of warez. This isn't just me quoting a party line here - this is simply practising safe computing. Only download from trusted sources.

A CHALLENGE FOR VIRUS WRITERS OR ANTI-VIRUS SCAREMONGERS
The deal: I'll stand in a room with you and all your infected toys. I'll have a old Series 60 smartphone, a UIQ device and a Series 80 smartphone, all set with Bluetooth to 'Discoverable'. I'll give you as long as you want to try and infect me in any way whatsoever, I'll even accept your SMS and MMS messages and generally communicate. If you succeed in infecting me, I'll hand over an obscene amount of money. No-one fancy the challenge? I thought not.
Symbian OS viruses - just keep your software legal and move on....
Footnote: in 4 years, no company has EVER take me up on the challenge....

You can keep your Symbian smartphone completely free of malware by following a few simple rules:
  1. Use an up to date (S60 3rd Edition, UIQ 3, etc) smartphone
  2. Don't accept unsolicited Bluetooth transmissions from other phones. Or trust applications tacked onto MMS messages ('e.g. Hey, try my new, kewl game!')
  3. To avoid mischevious 'trojans', don't install applications unless they are ones you've asked for or have downloaded from reputable software sites (Handango, AllAboutSymbian, My-Symbian, 3-Lib, etc.)

In most cases, it's quite safe to leave Bluetooth visibility as 'Shown to all'. If you do get bothered by too many unsolicited connection attempts, simply change the setting to 'Hidden'. Although given that the number of 'infected' older Series 60 phones worldwide is truly tiny, you really don't have to worry! You're 100 times more likely to be hit by lightning or to win the lottery...

Shutdown Computer From Mobile Using PHP

Undefined Soul 1:04 PM 3 Comments
shutdown using phpOn the Internet there are some tutorials about shutting down a computer from a mobile phone. But, in this tutorial we'll check out a way to shutdown a computer from a mobile phone using PHP.For those who don't know PHP, it is a scripting language in simple words. We are PHP as it is a server side scripting language, platform independent and open source. That means we don't have to worry about whether the system runs on Windows or Linux. The procedure is really simple. All we have to do is to set up a server on the computer with PHP and execute system command to shutdown the computer.

1.SERVER SETUP

We'll use XAMPP to set up the server.Believe me it is too easy.

Go to
xampp home page.Download the available package (installer or zip archive).

Now,follow the instruction given on their site to install the server.Actually installation is just unzipping the archive to a directory. The installation will take just around 2 minute.

However you check my previous post on
setting up server on home computer.

2.PHP code

  • After installing XAMPP, just open up XAMPP directory. Then you will locate htdocsshutdown. folder.Open that and create a new directory/folder.You can name it anything you want.Suppose the name of the new folder is
  • Open the newly created folder shutdown and create a new file with index.php extension.
  • Now open up index.php file and place the nice little code if you run windows.
  • echo 'Shutting down'; exec("shutdown -s -t 30"); //30 means shutdown after 30 seconds ?>
3.Creating URL

Go to no-ip.com and register a free sub-domain and point it to the the following

http://YOUR-IP-ADDRESS/shutdown/

To find out your ip address just visit any site like http://checkmyip.com/.

That's it.Now you visit that link with no-ip subdomain from your mobile phone to shut down the computer.

BSNL GPRS Hack

Undefined Soul 11:27 PM Add Comment
You Can Surf For Free Via Gprs On Pc Too

I came to know of using BSNL GPRS for FREE with FULL ACCESS to All Sites.

Here is the way.

Create 2 connections with different names like "BSNL PORTAL" and "CELLONE PORTAL" with following settings.

Access Point Name = "celloneportal"
Proxy Service Address = "192.168.51.163"
Proxy Port = "8080"
Security = "NORMAL"

Rest fields to be as it is.

Now open phone's default inbuilt browser and select any of the two settings created to access the web. You will now access only bsnl's home site.

Now keep browser working and open another browser for full internet access like opera or netfront. In these browsers use the second setting created. Make sure to use second setting this time. connect to open a page. you get an error message like "ACCESS DENIED" but you don't worry.

Keep both browsers working in background and open connection manager. In connection manager just disconnect the connection that is not working like the second one you used to connect opera or net front.

Again open opera or netfront from background and this time use the first connection that you are using to connect with default inbuilt browser to connect to internet.

Sure this time you are connected with full access.

Enjoy your Free Internet
