Xiaomi Mi 3: First impressions review of the 'Chinese Apple's' Rs 13,999 flagship phone

Xiaomi Mi 3: First impressions review of the 'Chinese Apple's' Rs 13,999 flagship phone

Undefined Soul 11:54 PM Add Comment
Making its India debut, the fast-rising Chinese handset maker Xiaomi - which is often referred to as Apple of China - announced the launch of its three new handsets, including its flagship smartphone Mi 3, at its event in New Delhi. The Xiaomi Mi 3 is priced at Rs 13,999, while the other two phones launched under the Redmi series are priced under Rs 10,000.

Many of the experts got their hands on the Mi 3 smartphone at the launch event and here's what they thought of the phone, which the company claims is even faster than the Samsung Galaxy S5.

At first look, the Xiaomi Mi 3 reminded of the Lumia 800 as it borrows a lot of design elements from Microsoft-owned Nokia's early warriors. The Mi 3 looks good and has an elegant appeal to it. The phone's lightweight and its curved sides make it comfortable to grip. The matte-finished back adds to its beauty. Unlike the Rs 9,999 Redmi Note, the Mi 3's back panel is not removable and the phone supports only one SIM.

The phone's 5-inch 1080p IPS display has a good colour reproduction and great viewing angles. The touchscreen on the phone is very responsive and was smooth to navigate.

The disappointing thing in the phone was Xiaomi's India-specific theme. The icons used in the India theme are too gaudy for most smartphones users. But there is a way to switch the default theme and the looks improved.

The user interface is more like the one you find on other Android phones, but on exploring the apps, you see how different the interface is. For instance, the keyboard in the messaging app has all the numbers on the right - unlike their usual horizontal placement. I liked its calculator app as it looks a lot like the common Casio calculators.

Xiaomi places a high focus on themes for the phone. You get to see the different themes available, you might think different about it. The phone runs Android 4.4 with MIUI version 5.

The 13 megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash on the phone captures quality photographs, but don't expect them to be detailed. Its camera captures a good amount of light that makes the results impressive, but how well it fares in low-light conditions is yet to be tested. The 2-megapixel front camera is streets ahead of others phones in this price bracket; it won't disappoint selfie lovers. The phone is capable of recording 1080p videos.

The phone's 16GB of internal storage offers around 13.4GB of user-accessible storage space. There is no microSD card slot for additional storage. Beating under the hood is Qualcomm's 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB of RAM. It's too early to comment on its performance, so we are leaving it for the exhaustive review of the Xiaomi Mi 3 that would follow soon. The phone's speakers also appeared to produce loud and quality sound.

Altogether, the phone seems to be a good deal for its price but we are still holding our horses.

Whatsapp - Features you might not know

Undefined Soul 9:51 AM Add Comment
WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps available on almost all platforms such as Android, Blackberry, Windows, and iPhones.

They can be downloaded for free from the phone store for a year on most phones. After a year, you will have to pay a small annual fee to continue using the app, which doesn't happens. It renews Free Of Cost after every Year. However, some phones like the iPhone require users to make yearly payments right from the beginning. The cross-platform compatibility allows messaging between any two phones in which this app is installed. Once you have WhatsApp installed on your phone, you will be able to view a list of people from your Contacts who use this feature.

Sending your Conversation History
You can send a copy of your conversation on WhatsApp to yourself or someone else as an email message. To do this using an Android phone, click on Menu at the bottom of the conversation screen. Choose the Email conversation option and type the email address of the receiver. The entire conversation log including messages, videos, and images will be sent. This feature is also available in other smartphones.

Conversation Backup
You need not worry about accidentally deleting your favorite WhatsApp conversation with your friend. Click on Chat history backup and set up the time period indicating how often you want the backup to occur. You can also set the option to Never if you do not want a backup of your conversations.

Broadcasting a message
If you wish to send the same message to a few people at the same time, the Broadcast option can be quite useful. This option allows you to send the same message to multiple people on your WhatsApp list at a time. However, to use this feature, you must set up the Broadcast list that contains the list of people whom you wish to send the same message.

Privacy
This feature is available to both iPhone and Android users. You can hide the last seen option that prevents your WhatsApp buddies from seeing when you last checked your phone. While Android users can toggle between the ‘seen’ and ‘unseen’ statuses any number of times daily, iPhone users can make the change only once in a day. They have to wait for a day before making a change again.

Cloud Send
You can share much more than images and videos with WhatsAppusing the Cloud Send feature. With Cloud Send, you can get across a DOC, APK, ZIP, or PDF file to any person on your contacts list.

Only a few interesting features of WhatsApp messenger have been listed above. The best way to gain maximum insight of this wonderful app is to install it on your smartphone and explore it on your own. Most users find themselves hooked to this wonderful app and use it as the most sought after means of getting their messages across. It has also become increasingly popular over the traditional SMS. While some features vary depending on the smartphone in which the app is installed, most of them remain the same. This is why WhatsApp is still being widely used even after its acquisition by the social media giant Facebook.
What to expect from Android 4.4.3

What to expect from Android 4.4.3

Undefined Soul 10:53 PM Add Comment

Android KitKat
For many Android owners, the 4.4.3 update has yet to hit (though it is slowly rolling out -- when you will receive the update will depend upon your carrier and device). Although the new feature list isn't epic in length, what it brings to the table will have a lot of users happy... quite happy, actually. This is especially so for users who frequently snap photos with their device and/or record audio.
Aesthetics get little in the way of an upgrade. There is a slight tweak to the Dialer app, but that's the only change to the UI you'll readily notice.

The short list of major changes looks something like this:
  • A tweaked Dialer app with a colored Action bar (this is the UI change)
  • Contact app (sometimes called People) uses placeholder images, similar to those used by Gmail
  • Fixed hissing sound while recording videos (Nexus 5) is fixed
  • Fix for LTE connection dropping bug
  • Wi-Fi improvements
  • Microphone and earphone related changes
There are also a lot of other under-the-hood camera, Bluetooth, and other system-related bug fixes.
The cameras (especially those on Motorola devices) will see numerous improvements. Exposure consistency and flash coloring are dramatically improved. A big change for photo enthusiasts is better low-light handling for the front camera.

Speaking of Motorola devices, Moto X and Moto G owners will find a new app called Motorola Alert. This app will send out periodic messages to select contacts.

Probably the biggest upside to this update is the improvements to security, overall stability, and power profile features. One major update is an optimization to ZRAM support. This allows idle background apps to store data in a compressed RAM partition to free up RAM for applications. There's also a low-RAM API that improves performance on devices with as little as 512 MB of RAM (by using more aggressive memory management). Finally, an experimental Java runtime (called ART) improves application performance over the current Dalvik runtime.

On the downside, at least for Nexus 5 owners, the mm-qcamera-daemon bug (this is a bug that caused the camera to quickly drain the device battery) has not been fixed. The update also does not fix the LED Notification for missed calls (which has been plaguing many devices for some time now).

Android 4.4.3 is primarily a continuation of bug fixing for KitKat. However, don't let the lack of UI changes fool you... the 4.4.3 update will go a long way to improve the performance and stability of your device. So, when can you expect the rollout to your device?
  • GPE versions of the HTC One M7, Galaxy S4, HTC One M8, and the Sony Z Ultra should already have the update
  • Sprint users with Nexus 5 devices should be seeing the update soon
  • All other devices should see the update in the coming weeks
As with any Android update, predicting when a device will receive the new software is like predicting the weather -- it's hit and miss (and most often wrong). Every supported device should have the update available in the coming weeks. I can tell you that, as of this writing, Verizon HTC and Motorola devices, as well as AT&T Motorola devices, do not have the update available.
